Founded in 1942,
Monumental City Medical Society is the first African-American
physician association in Baltimore. Prior to the formation of
Monumental, African-American physicians had joined with
African-American dentists and pharmacists to establish the
Maryland Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association (MMDPA)
in 1905. However, because physicians had unique issues of
licensure, hospital privileges and patient access, they
developed Monumental as a distinct organization to address their
needs. Monumental is also an affiliate of the National Medical
Association.
Members of Monumental represent family practice, internal
medicine, general and specialized surgery, obstetrics and
gynecology, pediatrics, numerous subspecialties, psychiatry and
physiatry. Monumental also has associate members consisting of
physician assistants, rehab specialists (physical therapists,
occupational therapists, speech therapists), nurses and medical
students.
Monumental City Medical Society takes pride in being named the
"1993-1994 Chapter of The Year" for the National Medical
Association.
